The St. Michael-Albertville High School boys cross country season began its season with successful efforts in meets at Monticello, Anoka, and St. Francis.
The varsity boys placed 4th in 14-team meet at Bertram Lake Regional Park in Monticello Thursday, Sept. 8, to open their season, then split their squad into two teams with one team competing in the St. Francis Invitational meet and the other team competing in the Anoka Invitational, both Thursday, Sept. 15.
In the Monticello Invitational, Jonah Breuer led the STMA varsity boys by placing 5th in a time of 17:24, followed by Alex Wolseth (7th-17:25), then Carter Knaus (12th-17:42), Joey Herbst (49th-19:16), Michael Youngberg (61st-19:37), Wyatt Bice (63rd-19:47), and Jack Peterson (65th-19:49). The JV boys were led by Ethan Cornell’s 9th place individual finish, with the team placing second in the JV team competition. Cornell ran the 5K in a time of 19:13. Coach Greeno commented, ”We competed well. Most of the teams here had one race under their belt, so I was impressed with it being our first race and it was a tough course. It was a good first outing.”
At St. Francis, the STMA boys varsity placed 5th among 9 varsity teams and were led by Alex Wolseth’s 3rd place individual finish. Wolseth ran the 5K race in a time of 16 minutes 52 seconds as the Knight’s number one and was followed by Knights: Joey Och (36th-18:24), Joey Herbst (39th-18:25), Ethan Cornell (41st-18:26), Jeremy Backman (47th-18:31), Alex McAloon (49th-18:32), and Wyatt Bice (42nd-18:46). In the JV boys 5K, the team was 3rd place and was led by senior Will Gallagher (10th-18:52) and freshman Mitch Meilahn (11th-18:53).
At Anoka, the boys varsity placed 6th as a team, out of 19 teams. Sophomore Jonah Breuer paced the team placing 9th individually with a time of 16:48. Following Breuer for the Knight boys included: Carter Knaus (22nd-17:01), Tyler Bartholomew (61st-18:16), Michael Youngberg (62nd-18:16), Jack Peterson (64th-18:18), Tommy Hamilton (65th-18:18), and Luke Peterson (82nd-18:44) to round out the “top 7” Knights.
The JV boys were 9th as a team with Matt Monseth the leading runner for the team with a 29th place finish and a 5K time of 19:03.
“At St. Francis and Anoka, we didn’t compete with our full-strength varsity, but did well against other teams’ varsitys. It’s great to split the teams and get twice as many kids a chance to compete at the varsity level,” commented coach Kevin Crocker.
“It also makes the hosting team happier when we don’t bring all 208 kids from our 7th-12th program”.
The “top 10” Knight boys will compete in the Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday afternoon September 24th, while the Knight boys that do not run Griak will have competed in the Chisago Lakes Invitational Tuesday, June 20, at Ki-Chi-Saga County Park.
