STMA boys’ basketball broke through for its first win under Derek Johnson in a victory over the Big Lake Hornets.
The Knights fought hard in the first half and emerged with a 27-25 lead at the break. The team outscored Big Lake 30-22 in the second half to claim a 57-47 victory. Isaiah Weston led the Knights by scoring 17 points. Colton Campbell chipped in with 14 points.
Tyler Hoselton and Jacob Veire each added eight points for the Knights. Brady Vogt led the Hornets with 15 points.

BUFFALO
The Knights followed up a Big Lake win with a loss against Buffalo.
STMA held an early lead, but cold shooting led to a comeback for the Bison, who took a 26-21 lead into halftime. On the final play of the first half, bad luck struck the Knights as Tyler Hoselton suffered an injury. Hoselton did not return to the floor in the second half.
Travis Brown picked up the scoring for the Knights in Hoselton’s absence, finishing with 15 points. However, Buffalo prevailed in the end by the score of 52-45. Hoselton finished with eight points and Isaiah Weston had five.
Coach Johnson said things are still a work in progress.
“We’re still attempting to make the right basketball plays, and in the long run, if we gain more confidence and figure out how to really succeed in varsity basketball, we’ll turn things the right way,” Johnson said.
The Knights played Wayzata on Tuesday. The next game on the horizon is Brainerd on December 30 at Buffalo High School.
