The STMA Knights hockey team rode a quick start to a 5-2 victory at the Moose Sheritt Arena against the Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake Moose.
Mitch Bourgerie provided the spark for the Knights by scoring twice in the opening period. His first goal came at just over three minutes into the game (Brandon Heiber) and his second came nearly ten minutes into the game (Jack Kelly).
MAML cut into the lead with a goal from Casey Chiodo (Ville Salovaara, Ben Ward), but Brandon Heiber restored the two-goal lead with a score late in the period.
Ben Ward made it a one-goal lead again with a power-play goal (Nate Maas) in the second period, but Cam Fuerstenberg scored a PP goal (Casey Crandall) of his own minutes later to restore the lead at 4-2.
Fuerstenberg scored another in the third period on an empty net to secure the win for the Knights. STMA had nine penalties in the game, but overcame them in the victory.
“Overall, it was a good win, we knew it would be a battle,” head coach Jerr Johnson said.
The Knights play Buffalo at the Civic Center on Thursday and host Duluth East on Saturday.
